How combat level is calculated

Your combat level comes from seven skills: a base every account has, from Defence, Hitpoints and Prayer, plus your strongest combat class. ⌊ ⌋ means round down.

Base
¼ × (Defence + Hitpoints + ⌊Prayer ÷ 2⌋)
Melee
0.325 × (Attack + Strength)
Ranged
0.325 × ⌊Ranged × 1.5⌋
Magic
0.325 × ⌊Magic × 1.5⌋
Combat level
⌊Base + the highest of Melee, Ranged and Magic⌋

Only your strongest class counts

Ranged and Magic count one and a half times because each stands in for Attack and Strength together. Whichever of the three classes is highest is the only one that counts, so training another adds nothing to your combat level until it overtakes. That's why a Magic level can leave your combat level where it is.

Levels that don't count

Only half your Prayer level counts, rounded down, so going from an even Prayer level to an odd one never changes your combat level. Ranged and Magic are rounded too, so their levels alternate between adding a little and adding more.

Every account starts at combat 3, with 10 Hitpoints and 1 in everything else, and the highest possible is 126, with 99 in all seven skills.
